''Sing; sing a song of joy, of peace and understanding''

Despite it being winter the open desert provided a warm and friendly backdrop, and since very little of the Projects interior now offered any appeal to either Al or myself, an outdoor setting seemed the ideal place to hold our festivities.

There was eggnog and plenty of good cheer, and for the first time in many years Al and I stood side-by-side, our voices raised in song, rejoicing in the season and the ability to share it together.

Al's eyes shone as we sang, reminding me of the million tiny stars witnessing our celebrations, and the one in particular which had shone in the east so long ago.

Even though I didn't need an excuse to do so, I leaned in close to listen to Al, surprised to discover that he wasn't singing - he was praying. I gave him a quizzical glance, but he just shrugged his shoulders at me.

"Do you think I'm asking too much?" he asked.

I didn't have an answer for Al though it shouldn't have surprised me that considering what we, and the rest of the world, had been through in the last few years, all he wanted for Christmas was peace and understanding.
